Douglass was born Oct. 27, 1843 in Rush Township (Monroe County, NY). He moved to Vergennes Township (Kent County, Mich.) in 1853 with his father. Douglass served in the Civil War and was discharged in Tennessee, age 20, in Dec. 29, 1863. He is not listed in the Michigan Soldiers and Sailors Index.
